Through the Noise, Through the Night

It’s actually been a couple of years since Ben Glover dropped this beautiful album, Through The Noise, Through The Night, an album that any fan of besieged and nicely wrapped singer/songwriter treatments should not forget when they begin to name their favorites. Hanging just around the edge of a new aged classic rock sound, Glover shows us that the power of a pretty little song about something pretty and little is something we will never grow tired of.

With a voice like Petty, Glover sings of love and loss as expected. But, he also spins a bit of sappy storytelling into a modern display of artistic ingenuity. Just check out tracks like “Full Moon Child” and “First Chance For A Second Try” and see for yourself if Ben isn’t everything you are looking for in the new age version of singer/songwriter holding a guitar and pouring is soul into a cup half filled with Jameson, and the other half with institutive hope. And the borderline country/folk opus “Too Late To Leave Her Alone” is one of the most genuinely intimate songs you may ever hear, so much so that you might feel as though you are actually intruding, hearing something that was only meant for two.

Ben Glover is just plain great. No, he’s not spewing out obscurities and obscenities to demand attention, and he’s not quoting little known Peruvian philosophers or turning the latest Mac Book applications into some sort of art form. He’s simply showing us how wonderful a pretty little song, laced with violins and fluttering magic, can make us feel something we should be feeling all the time. And if Ben Glover can’t make you feel like you are floating on a cloud of overtly explosive love, then the sorrow is all yours. - Trainwrecked Society

Sunday Life

Special thanks to Edwin McFee for nice write up in the Sunday Life.

"This week it gives me great pleasure to tell you all about a new release from one of NI's best singer/songwriters treading the boards. His name is Ben Glover and his latest single 'Whatever Happens Will' has just been unleashed and after getting a few sneaky listens around a month or so ago I can tell you that the track showcases the musician at the peak of his powers.

The tunesmith said he wrote the song just a coupld of days after he finished the recording sessions for the album 'Before the Birds." He added: 'The central theme of the song is the realisation that our efforts are often of little consequence, things happen at their own pace. Essentially, we are not in control no matter how much we like to fool ourselves into thinking that we are.'

Having already wowed the critics for the likes of Hot Press and US mag 'I AM Entertainment' with his third record 'Before the Birds.' and had his music playlisted on radio stations around the world, the constantly touring tunesmith is arguably one of NI's greatest exports right now and it looks like he's only just getting started.

"Whatever Happens Will" released 12th Sept 2011

Ben's single "Whatever Happens Will" is being released digitally on Sept. 12. The song is already enjoying early spins at radio.    "I wrote this song just a couple of days after I finished the recording sessions for the album "Before The Birds." The central theme of the song is the realisation that our efforts are often of little consequence, things happen at their own pace, essentially we are not in control no matter how much we like to fool ourselves into thinking that we are. It was written very quickly and the song arrived close to be being in it's whole state and didn't need much tweaking. We recorded it in the same spirit as it was composed - pretty quickly, in one session. Once again the producer Neilson Hubbard was at the helm in Mr Lemons studio in Nashville. "

The song will be available for download at iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby and all digital outlets.

Hotpress Review - 4 out of 5 stars

THIRD ALBUM FROM NI TUNESMITH IS A TRIUMPH

"Over the past few years Antrim's Ben Glover has been steadily refining his craft as a world class singer-songwriter. It seems all that hard work has paid off, as his latest offering "Before The Birds' sees the troubadour at his career best. Recorded in Nashville, the ten track opus is an alt.county tour de force that effortlessly veers from bourbon-soaked ballads ('Almost Home') to Heartbreakers-esque pop-rock ('You Are The Same As The Tide') all of which marks Glover as one of Ireland's finest tunesmiths. The addition of backing vocalist Kaci Bolls makes much of the material on "Before The Birds" soar to the stars and there's rarely a wasted note on this remarkable release."
(Edwin McFee)

All You Need Is Glove - Stuart Bailie

One of the occupational hazards of playing your music at civic functions is that people in suits will often get your name wrong. During one such speech, Anthony Toner had his surname amended to "Topper". Around the same time, Ben Glover had the "r" shaved off the end of his own title. Therefore Topper and Glove became a personal injoke - two musician pals, a comedic double act for their later years, fit for cruise ships and end of the pier revues. They even started to sketch out a logo, the white evening gloves perched on a gleaming top hat. Classy.

Anthony and Ben are adjacent on the Sunday bill for the Hilden Festival, out Lisburn way. And while the music is played with proper intent, the between songs banter finds both artists poking fun at each other. Nobody minds, it raises the temperature around the teepee stage and like a pocket version of Blur versus Oasis, it may even sell a few extra records.

However, near the end of Ben's set, the Topper and Glove hostilities are put on hold. Anthony steps up beside him and they play a ripper version of 'Don't Think Twice, It's Alright'. Then to compound the joy, they finish with 'The Weight'. It's a test for any player and singer, but these two guys deliver with the musical sass, the big voices and a tremendous empathy that fits with The Band and their comradely best. Mighty.

Goldenplec Review

Hailing from Antrim, Northern Ireland, Ben Glover moved to the home of some of his country singing predecessors in Nashville, Tennessee two years ago and it’s clearly had quite an effect on him. This is his third album and may be the one that really lights up his career, as listening through, it struck me as a work carefully honed over a lengthy period of time, in a way only someone with a very promising future could do.

‘Before the Birds’ opens with his newest single; ‘Trick of the light’, instantly showing off his voice, which has a smoothness that would probably leave all of Danny Dyers deadliest men crumbling wrecks. The guitar remains subtle throughout the album, meandering around his dulcit tones, and it quickly becomes clear that few aspiring artists could carry this off as well as he has.

On other songs such as Almost Home he incorporates some piano, but this still remains secondary to the vocals and actually gives them quite a powerful backing, despite his easy-going style. This is a more modern approach to country music, still sounding so familiar and homely, but with a voice unique enough to allow him to stand out from his counterparts.

The effortless flow of the album makes it difficult to pick out the strongest tracks. ‘You are the same as the tide’ is probably most suited to mainstream radio and if I was forced to choose I’d have to say ‘Lockdown’ is my favourite.

I have to admit, I was absolutely ignorant of any mention of Ben Glover prior to last week, and for this reason I was preparing myself for yet another run of the mill singer-songwriter album in an already over saturated market. However, Before the birds turned that perception on its head. The albums mellow, soulful feel and brilliantly delivered vocals will appeal to just about anyone.

With songwriters such as Ryan Sheridan making their mark on the Irish music scene, it’s only a matter of time before Ben Glover builds up a similar, if not bigger following here, considering the popularity of Ryan Adams.

So on that note, I’m off to track down and listen to some of his older material, but in the meantime, I’d advise everyone to get their hands on this.

Galway Bay FM Visit

Be sure to tune in on Friday, August 5 between 3-5 pm to catch Ben chatting with Jon Richards on Galway Bay FM. They will be catching up and spinning Ben's latest single "Trick of the Light".

Another great review of "Before the Birds"

I think it is fair to say Ben Glover is the next big thing to come from Northern Ireland, even though listening to him you would think he is the next great American singer song writer.  However, he is up there with all the best including the likes of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.  Although stylistically he is quite similar to Ryan Adams, no not the Summer of 69 kid but rather the prolific Alt. Country singer song writer.  If you don’t know him get to!  Anyway Before the Birds is a beautiful record that has Glover take us on a magical journey filled with ups, downs and some amazing lyrics.  The album is honest and refreshing and makes listening to it an absolute delight.  It is fair to say that Glover has really captured his sound with this release.  Almost Home is a stand out track and is one any commuter will be able to appreciate.  It starts soft and progresses nicely, building as it goes. To Believe is a country ballad without the over the top cheese slide guitar that most Irish country artists on TG4 tend to over use.  Any Other Way is a Ryan Adams-esque love song that he would be proud to say is his.  It is heartfelt and honest.  A nice break from the dance-pop-club albums that tend to be dominating radio play. - Boob.ie

West Coast Trip in Full Force

Ben's first trip to the West Coast has been a busy one. He landed in Los Angeles on Sunday evening and by early Monday morning he was on the the go. His first day on the ground included meetings in Santa Monica, a photo shoot in Hollywood with the fabulous Erica Lowe and then straight to headline a gig at Los Angeles' prestigious Hotel Cafe. Ben will be spending the entire week on the West Coast with Sara Griggs from Green Room Artist Relations, then back to Nashville for a few days before he returns to Ireland. Meanwhile, back in the Republic of Ireland, the single "Trick of the Light" has been enjoying early success at radio and has already been featured on RTE Radio 1,  Galway Bay FM and many other regional stations in the South.

File Under Good Music Review

Ben Glover is not just a good looking chap with a guitar in hand, no, no, no, he is a good looking chap with a guitar in hand, great songs and a hell of an album to sell at gigs.

Glover recorded new album Before the Birds in Nashville with producer Nelson Hubbard. Naturally when one finds a suitable and stellar workmate, a just relationship is formed where the producer can draw out the very best in the artist. And he did, because 'Before The Birds' is simply stunning. It's one of them more you listen to, the more you hear type of records, each song unveiling parts of Glover that he has laid bare.

His voice is also more heart felt and has developed a slight husky growl that gives his vocals an endearing charm. Opener 'Trick Of The Light' sets the tone for the entire album. The approach seems to be a less is more from the sparse instrumentation to the main focus being put on the vocals this time around and it works really well. Each track is allowed the space to envelope the listener and has a soothing and lasting effect.

It's definitely a laid back dinner party record but it's also a long drive on a summers day 'lets all be glad about what we have' - type of album as he evokes a happy, hopeful chemistry throughout.

There are stand out tracks that could hold their own on certain evening and night time radio shows, such as 'Trick of The Light' and 'To Believe'. But I don't see it sitting well between Beyonce and The Script on daytime/morning mainstream radio, as it's just not cast with the same iron, which is not entirely a bad thing either, in a commonplace where artists are slashing around at their integrity to write songs suited for radio it's always refreshing to find a songwriter that remains true to himself without sacrificing too much of his art. Besides, Glovers sound has a familiarity to it, he is like an old friend whom you will listen to when he speaks, this is an artist who can demand your attention as he HAS something to say

A fine album well worth checking out. – 8/10 File Under Good Music (Blogspot)

New Review of "Before the Birds" - Mutant Space

Ben Glover has been compelled to write songs since his mid-teens growing up in County Antrim, Northern Ireland when he was awoken and unsettled by Bob Dylan. Armed with a law degree from Queens University Belfast he put his legal ambitions on hold to pursue a career in music. That career got its start with Glover’s debut outing, The Week The Clocks Changed, produced by J.D. Foster (Calexico, Richmond Fontaine) and featuring guest appearances by A-list roots music artists including; Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller and Vince Gill. Through the Noise, through the Night, followed in 2009, which was produced by Neilson Hubbard (Kim Richey, Matthew Perryman Jones, Glen Phillips) and drew rave reviews and comparisons to the likes of Ryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen.

Relocating to Nashville in ‘09 — to summon the spirits of great songwriters that came before him; Hank, Willie, Cash and Kristofferson, Glover began penning new tunes with some of Music Row’s finest including acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier. His second record Through the Noise, Through the Night was filled with soul-moving melodies that linger and stir.

Now comes his 2011 outing, Before the Birds, again produced by Neilson Hubbard and recorded in Nashville.

Glover’s sound has since evolved. After three albums, the singer songwriter has found his musical balance and has stepped up the mark by creating a sound that is self assured and confident in its structure, composition and overall feel.

The production although masterful, has an organic presence that sits very well with the singers Springsteenesque grovel. The album contains 10 tracks that sit evenly well aside each other. Stand out tracks include lead single ‘Trick of the light’, that one would assume can accompany any film landscape. It’s just crying out for a sync. Other tracks of note include: ‘I am with you’, ‘Any Other way’ and ‘the banjo lead Lockdown’ are just great.

This is Glover’s second album working with the producer Neilson Hubbard and it’s the most personal record he has made. This is what happens when a damn fine producer creates a trusting environment that allows the artist to throw out ideas and try new things. And it has been most successful here on this record. It’s easy to see how the trusting relationship afforded Ben the space to explore and make quiet possibly the best record of his career. Well worth the listen, and after one listen it just grows on you and becomes an old friend. A stunning album.

Trick of the Light

Ben has teamed up with Good Seed PR (Duran Duran, Suzanne Vega, Marilyn Manson, Eleanor McEvoy) to release "Before the Birds" in the Republic of Ireland. "I've always respected Linda Coogan Byrneand the team at Good Seed PR and I'm excited about the opportunity to work with them," says Ben. "They have such a passion for the music they represent and I'm honored to be included in their roster of great bands."  The single "Trick of the Light" is being shipped to radio this week. The official add date for the single is Aug. 26 and release for the album is Sept. 9th. To listen to the single, follow this link!  soundcloud.com/goodseedpr/trick-of-the-light-by-ben

Back in the studio

Ben is heading back to the studio with Neilson next week to cut a remix version of "I Am With    You"  and is also record a new song called, "Whatever Happens Will". "I love being in the studio and I'm looking forward to getting in there and laying down these new ideas. The songs seem to come to me faster than I can get in the studio," says Ben. "I'm especially excited about " Whatever Happens Will."  I tried that out on the road for the past few months and the response was really overwhelming.

Congrats and special thanks!

Congrats to Ben and big thanks to Belfast's Downtown Radio for the 5th week on Downtown Radio's playlist with "You Are The Same As The Tide."

Maverick Magazine gives "Before The Birds" 4 stars

“Probably his truest and most honest album to date"

With two quality albums already under his belt, Ben Glover has decided to strip the sound right back, putting the reliance firmly on his vocals and the value of the songs. Produced again by Neilson Hubbard who was at the helm on THROUGH THE NOISE, THROUGH THE NIGHT this album has Ben Glover evolving into a very accomplished artist. Tracks such as the peaceful Song Of A Caged Bird Singing with its gorgeous lyrics and the more beat-driven You Are The Same As The Tide show the quality of both Ben’s singing and his songwriting. Radio 2 needs to be aware of this album as tracks such as the tender and expressive Trick Of The Light could be a hit with the listeners, especially on the Bob Harris and Alex Lester Shows. This is a good strong Americana album from a fine singer-songwriter.”
- David Knowles

Radio Appearances

Ben will be appearing live on a number of Northern Ireland radio programmes over the next week. He will be talking about his upcoming Irish gigs (The Black Box, Belfast on 10th June & Flowerfield, Portstewart on 11th June) as well as playing new music from "Before The Birds." Tune in and catch Ben on the following -
Monday 6th June: BBC Radio Ulster - The Late Show With Stuart Bailie @ 10pm
Tuesday 7th June: Downtown Radio - The Caroline Fleck Show @ 12pm
Wednesday 9th June: U105 - The Johnny Hero Show @ 4pm
Friday 10th June: BBC Radio Ulster - Arts Extra @ 6.30pm

"Before the Birds" - Album of the Month

Before The Birds is Glover's follow up to the hugely impressive Through The Noise, Through The Night which was our album of the month for May 2010, so it was always going to be a hard task to match its quality. Glover again went to Nashville to record with producer Nelson Hubbard. This is obviously a fruitful relationship that the pair posses as Before The Birds is simply stunning.

The overall vibe of the album is laid back and atmospheric with Glover's voice having developed a slight husky growl that gives his vocals an endearing world weariness. The opening track Trick Of The Light sets the tone for the whole album. The whole approach seems to be that less is more from the sparse instrumentation to the retrained production. The songs are allowed the space to envelope the listener and have a soothing, almost cathartic effect. I Am With You and To Believe, like Trick Of The Light, make nods to Dylan (Bob) in their structure and approach but Glover's voice is far more appealing than his Bobness's nasal tones.

The wonderful Almost Home and Song Of A Caged Bird Singing are things of rare beauty, like the type of songs that Springsteen was capable of in the early 80's with Nebraska. The pop feel of Lockdown is toned down by the interaction of banjo and hammond but it is still perhaps the most radio friendly of all the tracks. My favourite track is also the albums final one. At The Car park is an intensely dark and mesmerising song which reminds me of The Blue Nile and this is perhaps the strength of both this album and Glover himself. His sound has a familiarity to it, like all the best bits of artists he loves, yet he has nailed a sound which is uniquely his.

At only 32 minutes long and 10 songs it is over all to quickly but hey, that is what repeat button is for. With each album release he is laying down a new benchmark for himself which is going to be harder and harder to better. The thing is though, you just know that he will better it, as hard as it is going to be.

Lonesome Highway Review

The Northern Ireland singer/songwriter now spends the majority of his time in Nashville. This move has paid off on his latest album, third album. Produced by Neilson Hubbard in Nashville it highlights Glover's intimate style of writing and ever assured vocal skill. The musicians here, as you'd expect, are totally in synch with the songs and play there part well, delivering a tasty slice of roots orientated music that is prevalent on the fringes of Music City, if sadly not on the airwaves. Hubbard is joined by a full band who include Eamon McLaughlin on violin and some effective backing vocals from Kaci Bolls. But it's the songs that most albums are about and these are among the best Glover has yet committed to recording. Trick Of The Light opens the album and is soon followed by other songs that seek to define the minutiae of human relationships. A perennial pursuit of the songwriter and one with endless possibilities for perspicuousness. Almost Home delights in ending a journey while Song Of A Caged Bird Signing talks of a restlessness and the need to move on from difficult times and decisions. The album moves between those two reference points of melancholy and manifest good times. Before The Birds is an album that conjures a mood that is best sustained over it's ten tracks, rather than pointing to any single track, though the subtle restraint of the closing song At The Car Park has a haunting quality that last after the album has finished. A new song, yet to be recorded, played at a recent gig points to the fact that Glover is growing and moving forward as a songwriter, but for now this album is a more than satisfactory insight into the music of a talent singer/songwriter who has the ability to capture a mood and moment that will resonate with the attentive listener who will be rewarded for that involvement. - Stephen Rapid (LonesomeHighway.com)

Net Rhythms Review of Before The Birds

The Co Antrim songwriter's third album in as many years, like its predecessors it was recorded in Nashville and, like his sophomore release, finds Neilson Hubbard taking care of production duties as well as providing bass, piano, acoustic guitar and four co-writes. Having previously notched up comparisons to Earle, Forbert, Springsteen, Morrison and Gray, while faint traces remain here and there (along with a vague hint of Dylan) this time round he's very much his own voice.

Indeed two of the songs contain specific lines about following your own instincts. On the hushed and dusty slow sway Americana of Trick Of The Light he sings "there's no path to follow, we make our own road" while To Believe, a gently jogging folky number with muted gospel organ backing on the chorus, offers "loosen up your golden chain, follow where your road will lead."

The song itself is about relationships and how sometimes you can only hold on by letting go. And, just as he sings "and while you wander should you wonder just exactly what you need and your heart tells you it's me I hope you find a reason to believe, bring it back to me" so many of the songs here are about building solid relationships, the difficulties of making them work and of the distances that often open up even when the bonds remain connected.

On the jangling mid-tempo You Are The Same As The Tide, one of the many highlights, his lover's "rushing in and pulling away always out when I'm standing on the beach" while the opening line of the chords tumbling Any Other Way declares "you and me we're like a hammer and nail I guess we go together" as he again sings about being there when his lover's done 'flyin 'round'.

Accompanied by a melancholic plucked banjo, the slowly gathering Lockdown will strike a note with anyone who's found it impossible to break through another's self-defensive walls and of the hurt silence can cause. It's a song Tom Petty would have been proud to write.

Sketching pictures, Glover's lyrics are economical and direct, yet emotionally poetic. It's testament to his writing skills and the conviction of his heart that he can write something called Song Of A Caged Bird Singing with a line about a broken wing and soar above the inherent cliches.

Much of the album plays out with simple acoustic melodies, gathering the sadness around the guitar strings and Glover's whispery vocals, the songs suffused with longing, whether it be for home (the dreamy Almost Home with its keening pedal steel) or for contact and communication, beautifully captured in the soulful, flugelhorn-kissed At The Car Park where two souls and the whole word sit lonely in the dark.

Ultimately, though, he's a hopeful romantic. Backed by a Memphis soul late night Hammond organ, on the slow waltzing retro groove Sweet On You, co-written with backing singer Kaci Bolls, he whispers "I think of forever when I think of us.. Stay sweet on me, whatever you do, I'll always want to stay sweet on you."

Take a listen, because this is a musical love affair you'll want to be in for the long haul.

New Review of "Before the Birds" - Fan Realm

I’ve been enjoying this album for several days now. Ben Glover’s voice is as smooth as chocolate and Before the Birds is as warm and comfortable as your favorite fleece on Saturday morning.

Ben either wrote or co-wrote all the songs and each one is perfect for him. The more you listen to them the more you hear. These are songs about love rather than songs about being in love. You’ll be hooked on them right away. From A Trick of the Light to the atmospheric At The Car Park each one has a story to tell. If I had to pick a favorite it would be a tie between To Believe and You Are The Same As The Tide but I’m certain every listener will find several they connect with and love. This album will mellow out even the toughest commute. It’s is a must have.

New Review of "Before the Birds"

"Ben Glover is Northern Ireland's answer to Ryan Adams. He writes songs straight from the heart, and lays his soul in the music in a way that many a disillusioned and stagnant singer / songwriter can envy him.

The plan was that this album would be a part of my "pics from the album stack", but it is simply so good that it deserves to be reviewed on its own.

As previously mentioned, I get sent incredible amounts of lousy music to review. But is it the little gems that hide among these that make it worthwhile to rummage through the pile every week.

And this is a real treat.

I mentioned that Ben Glover is Northern Ireland, and this is his third album. And how he has managed to sneak away from my ears until now I do not understand, because on his previous record he's had help from profilic people like Buddy Miller and Vince Gill - and wrote a song together with a blog favorite Mary Gauthier. And Miss Gautiher is also a big fan of young Mr. Glover. He has been regular supportgig for her on her Foundling tour in the UK, and he has already had respectable success in England and the United States as an artist.

Glover has a lot of the same qualities as Ryan Adams. He puts heart and soul into his songs, he writes killer lyrics and he sings like a god. There is something in the phrasing in the way he sings in that reminds me of a early and acoustic Ryan Adams. He says it Bob Dylan album who made him take the direction he did - and although he trained as a lawyer he chose to pursue music as a careed. As inspiration, he namedrops all of the artists that we really likeM; Paul Simon, Neil Young, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash ... and so on. He lives part-time in Nashville, and says he draws inspiration from the streets where his heroes have walked before him.

What raises Ben Glover above the common herd of Singer / Songwriters is of course the songs and his lyrics - but good lyrics does not help if they are delivered in a  meaningless way. And this is where Glover is exeptional. All the time you can HEAR how he means what he sings, and we believe in Glover as a singer, as a storyteller, as an artist.

The female voice we hear in many of the songs belong Kaci Bolls, who is also a brilliant artist in the process of establishing herself in Nashville.

My favourites on the album are actually the entire album. It stands solid as ALBUM, and none of the songs strike me as weaker than the others. A relatively rare occurrence today.

I can not help but recommend "Before The Birds". "- Rune Letrud (

"In the second hour, I put out an interview with
Ben Glover, recorded in Nashville a few weeks ago. The guy is currently in excellent form and third album 'Before The Birds' is full of skill and heart and illumination. If 'I Am With You' doesn't blossom into classic status, then the world is terribly wrong. " - Stuart Bailie BBC

New Review of "Before the Birds"

Ben Glover Before the Birds (Independently released CD, Pop)

Whether or not he ever becomes a major celebrity, it won't be because Ben Glover doesn't have the songs or the voice. Originally from Belfast, Ireland, Glover now resides in Nashville, Tennessee. Considering the sound of the tunes on Before the Birds we can't help but think that Nashville is a more appropriate place for Ben's music. This is his third album...and it's chock full of the kind of hummable organic Americana-style mid-tempo pop that folks in the United States crave. The songs are somewhat reminiscent of artists like Leonard Cohen, David Gray, and Bob Dylan. Ben writes songs that are instantly warm and hummable...and he has a great understated way of singing that is particularly inviting. Produced by Neilson Hubbard (this guy's name is all over the place these days), Before the Birds is a super satisfying collection of oughta-be hits. Our favorite tracks include "Trick of the Light," "You Are the Same as The Tide," and "At the Car Park."

New Record Out Today

Ben's third studio release "Before the Birds" becomes available for purchase today! The album features 10 songs written or co-written by Ben and includes the highly anticipated "I Am With You." "Before the Birds was recorded in Nashville with Neilson Hubbard and can be purchased here on the website (US only) and through I Tunes, CD BABY and Amazon. com.

Early Review of "Before the Birds"

Our first artist today is Northern Ireland's Ben Glover.  Glover had just finished his law degree in Belfast when he decided to become a troubadour instead of a barrister. Still relatively new to the scene, Glover has already recorded or played with the likes of Vince Gill, Jim Lauderdale, Buddy Miller, and Mary Gauthier.  Gauthier especially has taken an interest in Glover, naming him as the support act for her upcoming tour of Ireland & the United Kingdom this spring.  Glover's third record, Before the Birds, is comprised of ten mellow mid-to-slow tempo tunes with heartfelt lyrics and a pleasing delivery.  Highly recommended.

Ben and Stuart Bailie Visit Manuel

From Stuart's Blog...

Manuel Arturo José Cuevas Martinez makes bespoke clothing for Jack White, Kid Rock, the Killers and Bob Dylan. His style is western extrovert, adorned with magical motifs and startling colours. Back in the day he worked for the famous Nudie Cohn, but he has clearly developed his own legend, working into his senior years and name-checking Keith Richards, the Grateful Dead and the old greats like Porter Wagoner.

He has still heaps of that Mexican charm and his studio in Nashville is adorned with letters from Ronald Regan and images of his old work with Gram Parsons - the legendary suit worn on 'The Gilded Palace Of Sin'. He smiles when you mentioned the ruckus it caused and you feel that the guy's astonishing energy will be stitched into many more ensembles.

Here's a picture of himself, myself and Ben Glover. The latter you may know as a talented Antrim boy now working in Nashville and who was set to buy an impressive black suit until the price tag almost caused a fainting fit. Some day fella, you will wear those duds with pride.

New Song Featured on MMXINI Double Album for SXSW

MMXINI – The Album

Northern Ireland has produced an extraordinary amount of internationally renowned artists across the years:

  • Van Morrison’s reputation as a songwriter and performer is second to none.
  • David Holmes continues to produce and compose some of Hollywood’s most captivating movie soundtracks.
  • The Undertones released some of the most infectious punk pop records of all time.
  • Snow Patrol have proved to be one of the 21st Century’s hottest international acts. Now 2 Door Cinema Club are following closely on their heels.

We celebrate this wonderful heritage and work with those who will follow in their footsteps – the new musicians, writers, performers and music entrepreneurs who will capture the world’s imagination.

About this CD

This double album has been compiled to highlight the extraordinary creativity, confidence and individuality of the current crop of music makers from Northern Ireland.

The White Album

The White album showcases bands and artists who above all are master songwriters – mostly genre defying but displaying pop craft and lyrical sharpness, often with ‘more than a nod’ to folk and roots influences.

It should come as no surprise that many of the artists have had previous recordings and compositions synchronised in international film, television and advertisements – and we would anticipate multi media placements for many of the tracks on this album.

"You Are The Same as the Tide" from the upcoming release "Before the Birds" is featured on the "White" album.

"Before the Birds" set to be released April 4

"Before the Birds" - Release date set April 4, 2011

Ben is excited to announce that his new album, "Before the Birds" will be released on April 4. The album, produced by Neilson Hubbard, features 10 new songs written or co-written by Ben and includes the highly anticipated "I Am With You."

"I feel as if it's taken three albums for me to finally step into my own shoes; to finally create a sound, which I feel wholly represents me. It's not as if my first two albums were very heavily produced, but by sound has naturally become more stripped back, less layered. I was very intent on making my vocal and the essence of the song be the focal point of "Before the Birds." This was my second album working with Neilson Hubbard and it's the most personal record I've made. Neilson creates such a trusting enviornment that allows for us both to throw out ideas and try new things. That relationship afforded me the space to explore and make the truest record of my career."

In support of this release, Ben will join Mary Gauthier for 12 dates throughout Europe starting April 28.

"Before the Birds" will be available through this official website, and online retailers such as CD BABY, Amazon, and I Tunes.

Ben is preparing to hit the road once again with Mary Gauthier for her tour of the UK and Ireland this Spring. "I am so grateful for the opportunity to support Mary on tour. The first date kicks off  at Chequer Mead in East Grinstead, England  on April 28. For a full listing of dates, please click Live.

Glasgow Americana Show Review

Keeper of the Americana flame in Glasgow  - Kevin Morris of The Fallen Angels Club has just delivered 5 days worth of Americana music to the city of Glasgow as part of the 4th Glasgow Americana Festival.

I only managed to make it along to a few shows but enjoyed them all. One of which was that of Northern Irish songwriter now based in Nashville - Ben Glover, who had jetted in to open for Tift Merritt. Ben gave a storming performance of songs from his album Through The Noise, Through The Night with a brilliant version of Atlantic City thrown in to the mix for the CCA crowd. His cd is hot property in my household  - I love the lyric ‘she’s got the same last name as a well known whisky’ from the track Full Moon Child  - I’m convinced the surname in question is Grouse. - John Alexander

Concert Review - Glee Club, Nottingham 16 Nov '10

"That fine Louisiana singer and guitarist Mary Gauthier christened the classy new music room at the Glee Club with an act that touched all the emotions.

Adoption's a more emotive subject than most, and Gauthier distils painful attempts to contact her long-lost natural mother in her latest album The Foundling. If we'd come feeling good, she remarked, we'd leave feeling grateful. But an impish grin accompanied the comment.

Indeed, Gauthier became a top songwriter because she doesn't wallow in self-pity. She observes herself and others with shrewd understanding. Every life is a story worth telling: Gauthier tells it in words that are crisp and music that makes it all bearable.

Her narrative of the hobo king illustrated both the sympathy and the humour.

Gauthier's voice, low and expressive, was partnered by the gorgeous 5-stringed fiddle and ardent harmony singing of Canadian musician Tania Elizabeth. An instrumental solo nearly brought the house down.

Of several requests gladly accorded, Mercy Now served as the memorable finale, Drag Queens in Limousines providing a spirited encore.

Ben Glover, who wrote Full Moon Child with Gauthier, paved the way for her set. From Northern Ireland but now working in Nashville, Glover has been called the Irish Bruce Springsteen, and the tag is not undeserved.

The evening's one technical hitch was Elizabeth's misbehaving mic stand, quickly sorted. The Glee Club promises to be a paradise for songwriters – and a very agreeable rendezvous for their fans."

Gig Review - St Bonaventure's, Bristol 15 Nov '10

Gig review from St. Bonaventure's in Bristol - Mary Gauthier

...The New Orleans-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter had brought along Ben Glover to open the show.

Although from Northern Ireland he seems to have made a lot of friends in America where he now spends much of his time. And that is not surprising for he has a great voice and is a fine songwriter of edgy almost pop songs.

From the rapt attention of everyone in this packed venue you might have thought he was a headliner rather than the support act but it probably won’t be long before he is getting star billing. - Keith Clark (Crackerjack - crackerjack.co.uk)

Tour Blogging

Ben is busy blogging, keeping us up to speed on his UK tour with Mary Gauthier. So far he's covered Brighton, London and Brussels. Be sure to check out his news from the road in the "Blog" section of the site. New ones will be posted throughout the tour.

Ben kicks of Mary Gauther tour on November 10

Final preparations are being done before Ben flies out to begin his support tour with Americana great, Mary Gauthier. There is already talk of Ben being a "must see" on this tour. Mike Davies (Birmingham 101 Gig Guide - Midlands) says "Support comes Co Antrim singer-songwriter  Ben Glover whose sophomore release, Through The Noise, Through The Night (Mr Jones) conjures thoughts of Steve Forbert in his phrasing, vocal kinship and easy rolling melodies while among the co-writers is one Ms Gauthier, their Full Moon Child a bittersweet story of a motel bartender living on cheap cigarettes and unfulfilled dreams. A classic in the making, it's worth the price alone, but there’s more where that came from.   At some point, he’s going to become stellar, and you’ll kick yourself if you weren’t there at the start." “Gauthier’s new CD, “The Foundling” is the product of two years work, and is quite simply the best collection of songs she’s ever recorded. With ‘The Foundling’, Mary Gauthier has created her first masterpiece. Not for the easily frightened, it is the most raw, brave and ultimately satisfying album I’ve heard in a very long time. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. ” No Depression Magazine

Broken Jukebox Review

I have read people compare Glover to Ryan Adams and that seems apt, especially when it comes to vocal quality. Glover’s voice gives a frailty to some of these songs that really pushes their mood to another level.

I had never heard of the Irishman before receiving this record, his second to date. Recorded in Nashville in late 2009 Through the Noise, Through the Night, was good enough to prompt to buy his first release, The Week the Clocks Changed.

There are a number of killer tracks on this album, starting with the opener. “Full Moon Child”, written with Mary Gauthier, which follows the life of a down and out girl who works whatever job she can to make ends meet and embellishes her relationship with her boss to make herself feel better. A great sounding track that was extremely well written.

My next favorite is “The Hat”, the story of a man finding a cowboy hat washed up on the shore and deciding to put it on. He goes on to attribute any future positives in his life to the hat. A great idea for a tune.

Finally, “A Little Less Blue” stood out among the rest of the songs on the album. In a story of lost love the line “I’ll cover your name with another tattoo” really made ears perk up.

I wish a larger portion of the Americans who make the pilgrimage to Nashville to make a record came away with a product this good.Glover delivers a great record with many ups and downs emotionally. At times it seems slightly overproduced and makes me long to hear him in a stripped down environment, but that probably comes more from my personal tastes than actual quality.

I think this album is only currently available as a download but the hard copies will hit the market in August of this year. You should check out Ben Glover on his website and I will be attempting to see him live the next time he tours American soil for sure.

New pics from London Showcase

Fan Realm - Album review

"Ben Glover is a singer/songwriter from County Antrim in Northern Ireland but he also spends time in Nashville. I discovered Ben several months ago when I downloaded his song Where the Lines Are at the NI Charts site. I became an instant fan so I was happy to be asked to review his album.

This, his second album, was recorded in Nashville and you can detect that wonderful mellow realism that is part of the city’s style throughout. The songs have great lyrics. They spin intimate tales of dreamers, lovers and all of those who have reached the point in life where they realize that fabled happy ending may not happen but they keep going anyway. The tunes are catchy and the mood is upbeat not angsty, even when things are not going the way the subject of the song may have hoped. These are songs people can identify with which just adds to the enjoyment of listening to them.

I’d have a hard time picking just one favorite track. The first song Full Moon Child draws you and each of the songs that follow tightens the hold on your attention. I Am, You Are is a cometary on how we, as humans, are losing touch with our fellow humans in this busy world. These are songs of love, of regrets, of all the things that make up life. Great writers don’t really show us a light, they show us a mirror and that reflection is what is really enlightening. Ben Glover is one of those writers.

I urge you to go to Ben’s myspace page and listen to his music. You too will become and instant fan. You will be hearing lots more from this singer/songwriter."

Ben Visits Ricky Ross Show - BBC Scotland

Ben recently stopped in and did a live session with Ricky Ross on BBC Scotland. The two met in Belfast a few years back and got to catch up in Nashville last spring over a big southern breakfast. The pair reunited on May 28th in Glasgow on Ricky's "Another Country" programme on Scotland's BBC. Ben performed several songs and caught up on the latest tales from the road with Ricky.

Two years ago, trhe Co Antrim singer-songwriter made his debut with The Week The Clock’s Changed. Reviewing here, I likened him to Steve Earle, Ryan Adams and Springsteen but also noted how one of the tracks reminded me of Steve Forbert.

It’s Forbert who, in terms of phrasing, vocal kinship and easy rolling melodies, is the strongest comparison on this, Glover’s sophomore release. Again recorded in Nashville, this time produced by Neilson Hubbard, it may not have the heavy hitter guests (Gill, Lauderdale, Miller) of its predecessor but the musicians are first class and among the co-writers you’ll find the name of one Mary Gauthier. Their joint effort, the gently humming Full Moon Child, gets the album off to a glittering start, Glover’s dusty voice in fine yearning fettle as he spins the bittersweet story of a part time motel weekend bartender with ‘the same last name as a well known whisky’, living on cheap cigarettes and unfulfilled dreams.

A classic in the making, it’s worth the price alone, but that’s just a taster of what lies ahead. One of the more Forbert-like numbers, Monument Green reveals Glover’s keen ear for a catchy pop melody, Where The Lines Are (from whence the title comes) is a fine example of shuffling Celtic Americana that will again draw David Gray references just as Let It Do What It Does reveals a streak of Van.

If there’s a flaw it’s that, after the fourth track, I Am, You Are, an anthemic piano ballad waiting for the right stadium, the material’s less immediate and more moody. However, that’s not to criticise the quality of numbers like the Mike Scott-styled big music of Grounded, wry love song The Hat or First Chance For Second Lies, a track that wouldn’t sound out of place on a best of Fleetwood Mac.

Besides which, the album ends on as a high a note as it began with Too Late To Leave Her Alone, a seven minute slow waltzer unfolding to guitar, piano and strings backing that evokes star flickering desert night skies and carries you away like a passing comet. The man deserves to be huge. Consider it your duty to help him on the way.

Support Nashville

As many of you know, Ben calls Nashville, TN his second home. He was saddened to see the incredible pictures that came out of Nashville and Middle Tennessee after a historic rainfall last weekend. Floodwaters from many creeks and rivers  inundated literally thousands of homes and businesses. Additionally, the floodwaters from the Cumberland River poured into the downtown and Opryland area flooding the Opryland Hotel, The Grand Ole Opry, The Tennessee Titans stadium, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Country Music Hall of Fame. Thousands are still without homes and the rebuilding effort will take years. The people of Nashville have been amazing in helping their neighbors and volunteers are coming out in the thousands to help strangers rebulid what's left. You can help by making a donation to the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org) or the Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org).

Album of the Month - 5 Star Review

"Northern Irish songwriter Glover headed to Nashville to record this his second album. When I read this I normally know what to expect. An identikit country album that rolls off the production line with session musicians who make every record sound the same. Well I have to apologise to Mr Glover for my misguided pre-conceptions as what he has produced is a rich and warm album full of grown up pop melodies that bring to mind a young Bruce Springsteen. Credit must go to Neilson Hubbard for what is a beautifully produced album.

Album opener Full Moon Child is a deceptive one. It is so laid back it just washes over you only to find that you are humming it 5 mins later. Things really get going with the wonderful Monument Green, a song that has hit written all over it. Glover shows here that he has a firm grasp of what makes a catchy pop song. There are comparisons with David Gray in the whole vibe and feel of this album and none more so on the dreamy Where The Lines Are. The Hot is another song that hooks you in without knowing it, but believe me you will not get the tune out of your head. A perfect summer feel good song.

It is fair to say that this is a mighty fine piece of work. As the saying goes no fillers, all killers. I'm sure that stardom in his native Ireland is assured and with songs of the quality of First Chance For Second Tries he deserves it. Remember the name. He is going to be massive."

Recap of Trip to the States

Ben has just returned to N Ireland after spending two months in Nashville, TN. While in the States, Ben performed at SXSW in Austin, TX. He spent a great deal of his time writing for his next record, successfully penning 16 new songs. While he wasn't working on his project he was helping fellow artist Kaci Bolls write for her new record as well as play guitar and sing on her new record. Ben did manage to take a bit of time off for a trip to New Orleans, LA where he shot the video for "A Little Less Blue" in the historic French Quarter. He also tried his hand at being a true man of the Bayou by taking a trip into the swamp in Manchac, LA where he was entertained and slightly uneasy with the sightings of 13 alligators.

The Big Easy

Ben is packing his bags for his first trip to New Orleans, LA to shoot the video for his song, "A Little Less Blue". The video, which will be shot in the historic French Quarter, is set to be released in May.
